MONTHLY CLUB ROUND UP (FEBRUARY '24)

February might be the shortest month of the year, but it’s not been short of action!

The month began with some of our development squad players attending JudoScotland’s Scottish All Stars event at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility.

Big congratulations to everyone who stepped into a competitive yet friendly environment to begin the lifelong journey of progressive development and thanks to JudoScotland staff and volunteers for hosting another great event for our young judoka!

Results:

Luca - Gold

Nina - Silver

Finn - Playoff group

Nora - Playoff group

Antoni - Playoff group

Throughout the February half-term break, we hosted another exciting fun camp for our junior members, family and friends. Our coaches and young volunteers ensured the week was filled with fun, games, teamwork and judo for everyone involved and kept everyone active and engaged during the school break.

If our fun camps sound like something you would like to get your child involved in, keep reading on for some information on our upcoming Easter and Summer fun camps!

What an honour it was to be joined once again at the club by Shinji Hosokawa (1984 Olympic Champion + 1985 World Champion, coach to Shohei Ono and Tadahiro Nomura) along with Jimmy Purves (6th dan, coach to Billy Cusack)!

We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from such esteemed figures in judo, with Mr Hosokawa providing invaluable technical insights for our senior members across two excellent sessions.

It was a very busy evening, with over 70 seniors taking in every detail as Mr Hosokawa broke down the fundamentals of seoi-nage and ashi-waza across both sessions. Our players have certainly taken Mr Hosokawa's technical details forward into their own judo and our coaches also came away with great insights from such a highly respected coach.

Thank you for joining us and we hope to welcome you back again soon!

The new Lidl at Meadowbank Retail Park opened this month, with our judoka, coaches and our club mascot Obi the Highland Coo helping to cut the ribbon at the store’s grand opening.

Big thanks to Lidl for donating a huge amount of bananas, apples, pears and bottles of still water to the club!

Our members and parents were delighted to take home some fruit for their kitchens, and the children attending the February camp added extra fruit to their already healthy lunches and snacks.

Lidl will certainly be well supported by our staff and many members!

In case you missed it, we recently released an article about Kavan Majidi, a refugee from Iran who made Scotland his new home in 2020.

The Edinburgh Judo family play a small part in his preparations towards the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics and the wider community continues to support Kavan’s journey to success as a refugee in judo.

Kavan’s incredible journey serves as a testament to the power of perseverance, the value of the judo community and how sport can change lives. You can read his story by clicking the button below and we wish Kavan the best of luck in his upcoming competitions!

As we inch closer into spring, more competitions and club events are on the horizon - as well as hopefully some warmer weather! We have some of our 1st kyus looking to gain points towards their black belts at the National Dan Grading in March and our development squad members will be progressing their judo journey at another development event.

Booking information will be released very shortly for our upcoming Easter camp and the 2 weeks of summer camp, so keep an eye on your emails and our social media! Information on the next grading for our junior and senior members will also be shared very soon.

Until then, see you in next month’s round-up!
