After 22 years of dedicated coaching at Erskine Stewart’s Melville Schools, Karen Clarkson (née Cusack) is stepping back from her Friday coaching role. Karen has been a constant source of fun, stability, and discipline for countless young judoka, helping them develop both judo techniques and life skills like hard work, discipline, and resilience.
Karen retired from competitive judo after winning a bronze medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. Before that, she was crowned Scottish Champion twice and secured a silver medal at the British Championships a year before her Commonwealth success. As a member of both the Scottish and British teams, Karen trained as a full-time athlete, allowing her to travel the world and build lasting friendships. Initially, Karen agreed to coach for just six months, but 22 years later, her contribution to judo continues to thrive!
Judo is more than just a sport—it teaches young people to persevere, set goals, and build strong friendships. Karen has guided children from their first throws to becoming black belts, competing internationally, and excelling in life as they’ve moved on to universities or careers worldwide. She has seen families join the Edinburgh Judo community, with many members coached by Karen herself. Karen led the school’s judo programme with tireless passion and energy, keeping classes alive during lockdown with creative online sessions.
We are thrilled that Karen will continue to lead the Saturday kids’ sessions at Edinburgh Judo, bringing her knowledge to young judoka aged 3-11. In addition to her coaching, Karen provides valuable insight at coaches’ meetings, shaping how we develop young people in the club. Her expertise and thoughtful approach have influenced how we nurture the next generation of judoka, and we are grateful for her contributions both on and off the mat.
Billy Cusack, head of Edinburgh Judo and Karen’s brother, praises her as a successful coach who has left an indelible mark. While parents and children will miss her on Fridays, we look forward to seeing her continue to shape young lives on Saturdays. Thank you, Karen, for everything you have done and continue to do!
