Sarah Adlington, the Commonwealth heavyweight champion, has her sights set on the European Judo Championships in Glasgow in April when she competes at this weekend’s European Open in Sofia.
It will be the Edinburgh judoka’s first competition of the year and she is anxious to make a positive start with the Europeans looming on the near-horizon. The world No. 20 is expected to make the Great Britain squad of 18 for the event but she will be looking for a podium place in April with ranking points for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio up for grabs.
Edinburgh-based Gemma Gibbons, who won Commonwealth silver for England last summer, returns from injury to compete in the Under-78kg event this weekend and Kim Renicks, from Coatbridge, is in the Under-48kg event.
